SSL Secure Server Info
What is SSL?
To ensure secure data transfers over the Internet, Netscape developed the SSL encryption
standard. To encrypt and 'digitally sign' a document a secure web server is using an
unique certificate. Certificates (also called "Digital ID") are issued by
Certificate Authorities (CA). Some CA are trusted by the web browsers by default - like VeriSign.
How do I secure an URL (https://my.web.site)?
You need to have the "Senior" web hosting or a server hosting account. To
request a certificate from a CA you need to generate a key pair on your server. If we are
hosting your web site contact me (webmaster@digitex.net)
and we will generate the key pair for you. Certificates and keys are server/platform
specific and are issued for the exact server name. After you have the key you can apply
for the certificate (follow the instructions on VeriSign's
site) - last time I looked the price was $200.
I don't want to pay $200 to VeriSign, can I use your secure server?
Yes, provided you have the "Senior" web hosting account. You will need to e-mail
the pages (with all the pictures included) to webmaster@digitex.net
- we will install them on our secure server and we'll e-mail back to you the secure URL
which you need to reference from your web site.
