This page describes the purpose of the Apple-installed files within the Macintosh system folder, the folder from which the Macintosh operating system is built at startup time. Descriptions are based primarily on System 7.5, Apple's current "reference release" of the Mac OS. The information is current through System 7.5 Update 1.0 (System 7.5.1)

040 VM Update:

Fixes freezes on most 68040 Macs when virtual memory on.
630 SCSI Update:
Fixes freezes on the Macintosh series 630 that occurrs during large block transfers, such as when backing up to tape.
!TYC:
!TYC is an earlier version of the later extension called !PowerAV Update. This Extension patches a problem with the Power Macintosh AV models using Apple's 21-inch monitors.
!PowerAV Update:
PowerAV Update patches a problem with Power Mac AV models using Apple's 21-inch monitors.


 

A

A/ROSE:
A/ROSE stands for Apple Real-Time Operating System Environment, it allows communication between the Macintosh main logic board and Macintosh Coprocessor Platform (MCP)-based NuBus cards which run the Apple Real-Time Operating System, such as Apple's short Ethernet Nubus card.
About Apple Guide:
About Apple Guide is a Guide file which provides information about Apple Guide. In the Finder, select About Apple Guide under the question mark icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
Apple CD-ROM:
Driver software that lets applications communicate with Apple CD-ROM hardware. Does not support third-party CD-ROM drives. Note: only the System 7.5 CD-ROM that ships with PowerPC Macs can be used as a startup volume, and then only from Apple CD-ROM drives. Get Version 5.0.1 or newer to support CD300 Plus drives. To startup from CD-ROM on any Power Macintosh or Macintosh 630 family (Performa 630, Performa 635, Performa 636, Performa 637, Performa 638, LC 630, and Quadra 630), hold down the letter c key (lower-case only) during startup.
Apple Guide:
Apple Guide is Apple's interactive and context-sensitive help system. (Balloon Help is now being touted as useful for identifying objects on the screen). Guide help appears under the new question mark icon that replaces the Balloon Help icon in the upper right menu bar. It is only available in those applications which provide a Guide Help file.
Version 1.2.5, included with System 7.5 Update 1.0, runs native on Power Macs and is now compatible with At Ease. Power Macs may have trouble running some Apple Guide databases. Fix: trash PowerBook Guide Additions (found in extensions folder); unless your Mac is a PowerMac AV model, trash Video Guide Additions, Video Player Additions, Speech Guide Additions; then restart.
Apple Multimedia Tuner:
Apple Multimedia Tuner improves performance and fixes minor problems for QuickTime 2.0. It is available only separately from System 7.5 or System 7.5 Update 1.0
Apple Photo Access:
Apple Photo Access is part of Apple's CD-ROM software, it allows viewing of Kodak PhotoCD images. It requires the Foreign File Access extension and appropriate CD-ROM driver such as Apple CD-ROM.
AppleScriptLib:
AppleScriptLib is a shared library which provides native-code AppleScript support, required only by PowerMacs.
AppleScript:
AppleScript is a scripting environment that allows for automation of repetitive tasks within and between scriptable applications. Apple Event Manager, for support of scripting components other than AppleScript, is now built in. The Finder is finally scriptable in System 7.5, but the Finder Scripting Extension is required.
xAppleShare:
AppleShare allows access to network server volumes through the Chooser.
AppleTalk ImageWriter:
AppleTalk ImageWriter allows printing to a networked ImageWriter printer.
Audio CD Access:
CD-ROM extension which allows audio CDs to be played through an internal or external CD-ROM drive. Requires the AppleCD Audio Player application, usually found under the Apple Menu, or a third party replacement, as well as appropriate CD-ROM driver software, such as Apple CD-ROM, and the Foreign File Access extension.
Assistant Toolbox:
Assistant Toolbox adds special PowerBook features:
Enables Apple File Assistant to perform automatic file synchronization, i.e., the reconciliation of different versions of files between two Macs; Enables f-key command-shift-0 to sleep the system; Enables f-key command-control-shift-0 to sleep the hard drive; Enables "persistent RAM disk," which automatically saves contents of the RAM disk to the hard drive on shut down and restores contents on startup; Enables deferred printing, to automatically print a file when a PowerBook is connected to a printer (Note: Has a conflict with the Select 310 printer driver. Workaround: turn off background printing; not compatible with Quickdraw GX); Enables deferred sending of e-mail until reconnected to a network; Automatically reconnects newly available hard disks when woken from sleep. New for System 7.5.
Note: Assistant Toolbox is not listed in the installer's Custom Install options, and thus cannot be installed onto a PowerBook in SCSI Disk mode.


AV Serial Extension:

AV Serial Extension fixes Quadra 660AV serial printing problems.

C

Caps Lock:
Caps Lock enables display of an up arrow in the menu bar to indicate that the caps lock key is active. Intended for PowerBooks, which don't have a locking caps lock key.
Catalogs Extension:
Catalogs Extension add support for Catalogs under PowerTalk. Version 1.1.1, included with System 7.5 Update 1.0, fixes out- of-memory bug.
Clipping Extension
Clipping Extension enables Drag & Drop to the Finder desktop, so selections in Drag and Drop savvy applications can be dragged onto the desktop to create "clippings" files. Note that Drag and Drop within or between savvy applications such as SimpleText, Scrapbook, and Notepad works whether or not this extension is loaded, but you'll need it to drag to or from the desktop.
Color Picker:
Color Picker sets color used in various system items, e.g., appears when "Other" is chosen in Color control panel or when a color is double-clicked in the Labels control panel. Now allows choice of two methods (via More Choices button) -- HSL (for Hue, Saturation, Lightness), similar to the old Color Picker, and RGB (for Red, Green, Blue). Use Tab to cycle through options.
ColorSync:
ColorSync provides support for a system of matching colors among monitors, printers and scanners. Relies on the ColorSync Profiles folder inside the Preferences folder. Set color type of monitor with ColorSync System Profile control panel.

EM Extension:
Permits the startup process to be interrupted by pressing the space bar so that Extensions Manager can be used to change the extensions which will load. See Extensions Manager control panel.
EtherTalk Phase 2:
EtherTalk Phase 2 allows connection to an Ethernet network.

Fax Terminal 7.5 Compatibility:
Fax Terminal 7.5 Compatibility extension is included with Express Modem Software 1.5.4, which fixes incompatibility between System 7.5 and Express Modem Fax Terminal software.
File Sharing Extension:
File Sharing Extension permits sharing of folders and disk volumes on an AppleTalk network without requiring the full AppleShare server package.

Version 7.6.1, included with System 7.5 Update, improves overall performance and now automatically shares removables except audio CDs; also allows ejecting removables without turning off file sharing.
Find File Extension:
Enables command-F to launch the new, enhanced Find File Apple Menu Item (and has no other purpose). Without the extension loaded, the new Find File can be selected from the Apple Menu, and command-F brings up the old pre-7.5 Find File. With the extension loaded, Command-shift F launches the old Find File, and Command-shift-G finds again.
Finder Help:
Finder Help provides support for Balloon Help for the Finder.
Finder Scripting Extension:
Finder Scripting Extension provides support for scripting of the Finder; works with Finder 7.1.3 and later. Enables some features in the new Find File, e.g., dragging a found file's icon to the trash or new location. Versions 1.2 and later fix conflict with QuicKeys.
Foreign File Access:
CD-ROM translator allows non-Macintosh CDs such as ISO 9660, audio, High Sierra and PhotoCD formats to be mounted on the Mac desktop. Also allows, with the use of an audio DA utility, the control of audio CDs in a CD-ROM player.

High Sierra File Access:
High Sierra File Access is part of Apple's CD-ROM software which, in conjunction with Foreign File Access, allows mounting of non-Macintosh CDs created in the High Sierra format. It requires the Foreign File Access extension and appropriate CD-ROM driver such as Apple CD-ROM.

IIci/IIsi Monitors:
IIci/IIsi Monitors contains hardware specific information for the Monitor Control Panel that describes the capabilities of the built in Video Card for the IIci and IIsi.
ImageWriter:
ImageWriter allows printing to an ImageWriter printer.
InLineFilter:
InLineFilter helps AppleScript and PlainTalk work together.
ISO 9660 File Access:
ISO 9660 File Access is part of Apple's CD-ROM software which, in conjunction with Foreign File Access, allows mounting of non-HFS (Mac hierarchical file system) CDs created in the ISO 9660 format. It requires the Foreign File Access extension and appropriate CD-ROM driver such as Apple CD-ROM. Version 5.0.2 ships with System 7.5 and fixes several bugs.

LaserWriter:
LaserWriter allows printing to an Postscript Laser (LaserWriter) printer.
LaserWriter 8:
LaserWriter version 8 print drivers are a substantial upgrade over earlier LaserWriter software, supporting PostScript Level 2 printers. Version 8.2 fixes some bugs, but has problems on some multi-zone networks. Version 8.2.2 fixes the multi-zone bugs; this version is available separately from Apple. Adobe's PSprinter 8.2.1, also fixes the problem. LaserWriter 8.3 introduces Desktop PrintMonitor, which puts printer icons on the desktop via the Desktop PrintMonitor.

MacinTalk Pro:
MacinTalk Pro allows a Macintosh computer to read text documents in human-like voices. Requires voices in a folder titled "Voices" in the extensions folder and an application such as SimpleText which can use it.
Macintosh Guide:
Macintosh Guide ia an AppleGuide database describing how to do various tasks in the Macintosh user environment.
MacTCP Token Ring Extension:
MacTCP Token Ring Extension is for customers who have standardized on TCP/IP over Token Ring.
Mailbox Extension:
Mailbox Extension provides Mailbox support under PowerTalk.
MathLib:
MathLib boosts performance of math operations on Power Macintoshes. Updated with System 7.5 Update 1.0. Uselessly installed on some non-PowerMac models.
My Speech Macros:
My Speech Macros provides support for Speech Macro Editor.

Network Extension:
Network Extension is used by Personal File Sharing to select network options.

ObjectSupportLib:
ObjectSupportLib ia a shared library (PowerMac only) that provides services to allow applications to send and receive Apple Events that conform to the "object model."

Personal LaserWriter SC:
Personal LaserWriter allows printing on Personal LaserWriter printers.
PowerBook Guide Additions:
PowerBook Guide Additions ia an AppleGuide database describing PowerBook-related topics.
PowerBook Monitors Extension:
PowerBook Monitors Extension provides hardware specific information for the Monitor Control Panel that describes the capabilities of the video system for the PowerBooks.
PowerPC Finder Update:
PowerPC Finder Update provides support for native PowerPC code on Power Macs, but does not make the Finder itself native. The extension changes Get Info to alert users to the memory savings possible when using virtual memory on Power Macs.
Replaced by Finder Update 1.1, part of System 7.5 Update 1.0. PowerPC Monitors Extension:
PowerPC Monitors Extension provided support for unique AudioVision 14 Monitor on PowerMacs.
PowerTalk Extension:
PowerTalk Extension provides support for the PowerTalk services. Also contains information used by the keychain.
PowerTalk Guide:
PowerTalk Guide is an AppleGuide database describing PowerTalk (see glossary).
PowerTalk Manager:
PowerTalk Manager is a background application that coordinates the PowerTalk services.
Printer Descriptions:
This folder contains PostScript Printer Descriptions (PPDs) for individual printers; used by the LaserWriter 8 drivers. PPDs for printers never used may be trashed.
Printer Share:
Printer Share gives non-networked printers like the StyleWriter II the ability to be shared across network through the connected Macintosh, which works as a print server.
PrintMonitor:
This extension is launched when background printing is enabled and a print job has been qued.


 

Q

Quadra AV Monitors Extension:
Quadra AV Monitors Extension provides hardware specific information for the Monitor Control Panel that describes the capabilities of the built-in video for the Quadra & Centris AV systems. Removing this extension will have no effect on the ability of the Macintosh to use the built-in video card.
Quadra Monitors Extension:
Quadra Monitors Extension provides hardware specific information for the Monitor Control Panel that describes the capabilities of the built-in video for the Quadra & Centris Computers. Removing this extension will have no effect on the ability of the Macintosh to use the built-in video card.
QuickTime:
Allows the QuickTime movie player, such as MoviePlayer, or any QuickTime-ready application to play QuickTime movies. Also supports still-image compression.
QuickTime 2.0:
New version 2.0 is faster and allows for larger movies. Requires Apple Multimedia Tuner 2.0.1 or later to improve performance and fix some problems.
QuickTime PowerPlug:
QuickTime PowerPlug provides Power Macintosh native-code support for QuickTime; improving compression/decompression performance for the Power Macintosh.
QuickTime Musical Instruments:
QuickTime Musical Instruments provides musical sound synthesizers to play embedded MIDI tracks in QuickTime movies.

Record Button:
Record Button permits the recording of a sound using the Apple Adjustable Keyboard.

Serial Tool:
Serial Tool is a Modem Tool file for PowerTalk Direct Dialup Mail.
Scripting Additions:
This is a folder that contains the Scripting Additions files, which extend the capabilities of the AppleScript language. The folder also contains Dialects, representations of AppleScript that resemble human languages, e.g. English or French.
SCSI Manager:
SCSI Manager changes the disk operations for higher throughput. Versions of this software are also built into the ROMs of AV Macs, Power Macs and Macs with PowerPC upgrade cards.
Shared Library Manager:
Used for loading, unloading and sharing object-oriented code modules in library files.
Shortcuts:
An AppleGuide database describing Finder shortcuts.
Speech Guide Additions:
An AppleGuide database describing speech.
Speech Manager 1.3:
Allows users to change voices when using the text to speech feature of PlainTalk.
Speech Recognition:
Speech Recognition provides support for Speech recognition on Macintosh AV and Power Macintosh models with the PlainTalk microphones.
SR Monitor:
SR Monitor is used to monitor and interpret speech on Macintosh AV and Power Macintosh models with the PlainTalk microphone.
StyleWriter II:
StyleWriter II allows printing to StyleWriter I and II printers.
System Speech Rules:
System Speech Rules is part of the speech-recognition software on AV and Power Mac models with PlainTalk microphones.

ThreadsLib:
ThreadsLib provides additional information for Power Macintosh developers. Updated with System 7.5 Update 1.0.
TokenTalk Phase 2:
TokenTalk Phase 2 provides network support for Token Ring card.
TokenTalk Prep:
TokenTalk Prep provides support for TokenTalk Phase II.
