Use the SFC Utility to Extract
Cab files with Windows 98

bulletOperating System: Windows 98
bulletApplication: Dial-Up Networking

The System File Checker (sfc) is a new utility for Windows 98 that allows you to extract files quickly and safely. It is very easy to use and should eliminate any need to use the DOS extract command.

  1. Close all open applications.

  2. Click the Start button, and choose Run.
  3. In the Open text box, type sfc.

  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Select Extract one file from installation disk.
  6. In the text box, type the name of the file to be extracted.
    For example: winsock.dll, wsock32.dll or rasapi32.dll

  7. Click the Start button.
  8. In the Restore from text box, type the location of the Windows 98 installation files. This location may already appear in the dropdown list, and there is also a Browse button available, if needed.
  9. The Save file in text box should already contain the correct path (c:/windows for winsock.dll, c:\windows\system for wsock32.dll or rasapi32.dll). If not, type the correct path.

  10. Click the OK button.

  11. A default Backup folder of C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC should already be specified. Click the OK button.

  12. If this folder does not already exist, you will be prompted to create it. Click the Yes button.

  13. The extraction is complete. Click the OK button.

  14. Click the Close button.
